The novel becomes more graphic in its description of colors AFTER the storm hits Gale University. For example, the Yellow Hallway and pink and aqua conference room at Scene magazine, the little purple radio, the descriptions of the golden wig and Alison’s hair that looks dipped in ‘cherry pine.’ This is in homage to The Wizard of Oz and the contrast between a black and white ‘everyday’ world as seen by the heroine, and the dreamscape or magical parallel universe she exists in for the rest of the story.
